Writing a Masters Law essay
Along with the skills needed in writing other types of essay, to write Masters Law essays, one should add some unique features such as including a case summary, or an advice on possible solutions to a legal problem that includes legal memos. A good law essay should show adequate knowledge of the area addressed in the essay. It has to be presented in a wider context and be accurate with few errors. The essay should identify relevant points of law, and use supporting information and ideas. It has to have a clear structure, and a good argument style.
Similar to other forms of essay, a law essay has an introduction, main body and conclusion. It inevitably has appendices, and a bibliography. The bibliography has three sections: for books, articles and other, for statutes and legislations, and for cases. Both Statutes and legislations, and the cases are divided by jurisdiction and listed. While the introduction presents the main points and explains the overall structure of the essay, the main body is subdivided into paragraphs or sections. Headings and subheadings are usually used. The conclusion recapitulates the main points. Law essays include footnotes which should be brief and to the point. Citation for a law essay includes cases, law reports, statues, statutory instruments, the constitution, secondary materials and electronic sources.
