Various definitions of bibliometric analysis exist. <\/span><\/span>Merigó<\/span> and Yang (2017)<\/span><\/span><\/a> gave the recent definition of <\/span>bibliometric analysis as ‘A<\/span> quantitative study of bibliographic material (data) and provides a general picture of a research field that research papers, authors, and fields can include categories<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>’<\/span> <\/span>Bibliometric analysis filters out research by offering an estimate of their impact.<\/span> In addition, bibliometric analysis offers <\/span>a different perspective<\/span> in a field of research; it <\/span>can examine the relationship between recent studies and their analyses<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>Also<\/span>, bibliometric analysis can form a base for a <\/span><\/span>comprehensive review<\/span><\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/span>Thus, bibliometric research <\/span>allows on<\/span>e to engage in <\/span>various<\/span> activities to avoid bias and study choices<\/span><\/span>. However, one must note that bibliometric analysis cannot replace traditional research methods<\/span> and can only be used as an adjunct<\/span> (<\/span>Brika<\/span>, 2021)<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Steps for conducting a bibliometric <\/span>analysis<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are two broad techniques for conducting a bibliometric analysis- performance analysis and science mapping<\/span><\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>While performance analysis gives importance to <\/span>research contributions<\/span> to a specific field, science mapping focuses primarily on analysing the relationships between the research constituents.<\/span><\/span> Here are the general steps involved in conducting bibliometric analyses<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1.Defining the research question:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Defining a <\/span>research question<\/span><\/a> gives clarity on what a scholar wants to research and analyse. During this process, one should identify the study areas, research topics and timeframe they want to analyse<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. Data collection:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Relevant data is collected from reliable sources like articles, books, patents, and conference proceedings, from online databases or search engines. Various <\/span>databases<\/span><\/a> like Web of Science, Google Scholar or Scopus can be helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsequent to the data collection, the data is pre-processed by cleaning and standardising it.<\/span> Duplicates are removed, author names are standardised, and the data is formatted for analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliometric software is available that helps with the data analysis. Examples include VOSviewer, BibExcel, or CiteSpace. The number of citations, publications and co-authorship networks are analysed, and the frequently used keywords and topics are identified<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Result interpretation:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The results are interpreted after data analysis, which answers the research question. Trends, patterns and gaps in the literature are identified, and conclusions are drawn from the analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n
