Topic 1: A review on the suicidal tendencies with Borderline Personality Disorder: Differences in males and females

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental health disorder characterized by emotional dysregulation, instability in interpersonal relationships, low self-esteem and a distorted self-image. Individuals with BPD are said to indulge in reckless behavior like substance abuse, eating disorders and unsafe sex (Eskander, 2020). BPD is a significant public health problem since about 0.4-1.8% of individuals are affected by it in community settings, and the percentage goes up to 10-25% in hospital settings. Individuals suffering from BPD are more likely to exhibit self-harm tendencies, including suicide attempts and completed suicide. About 75% of BPD patients have attempted suicide, and 10% have committed suicide, a rate 50 times higher than the general population (Sher, 2018). Borderline Personality Disorders are diagnosed three times more commonly in women than men. Although women exhibit more suicidal tendencies than men, men are more likely to die from suicide than women (Glover, 2021). However, there is a gap in understanding the reason behind this finding. This topic is one of the examples of psychology dissertation ideas to understand how gender affects suicidal tendencies in BPD.

Topic 2: Study on the Advances in the Treatment of Peri-implant Diseases: Use of Antimicrobials

Dental implants are increasingly used to reduce edentulism, and it is estimated that the prevalence of dental implants will reach 23% in 2026. They are considered to be highly successful, with an average survival rate of 94.6%. However, there are also chances that the surrounding tissues will get inflamed, giving rise to peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is characterized by bleeding on probing, suppuration and radiographic bone loss. Smoking, diabetes mellitus, patient compliance and a history of periodontitis are incriminated as the risk factors (Kormas, 2020). Surgery is the gold standard for treating peri-implant disease, while antimicrobials are used as an adjunct for preventing and treating peri-implant disease (Alassy, 2021). There have been advances in the delivery of antimicrobial agents like photodynamic therapy and peptides to prevent and treat peri-implant disease (Ohba, 2020),( Yu, 2022), and they need to be explored in depth. This study will be of interest to students specializing in Periodontology and hence it is one of the examples of Periodontics dissertation ideas.
